Long but extremely informative read. By the way, I think Christians may well recognize that the Islamic State is not the only one where Apocalyptic thinking has influenced Middle East policy, all the way back to the creation of the Israeli state. Please do not read into that the idea that ISIS action is in any way morally equivalent to that of the United States since 1945. That is not what I am saying and it is a most dangerous line of thinking. But from a historical point of view, many modern interpreters fail to understand that the United States support of the nation of Israel owes more to Christian millennial theology than to pro-Jewish sentiment, going all the way back to Truman. It would be much easier for them to swallow the ultimate religious motivations of ISIS if they did.
